The Amarnath Temple, situated in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, is a holy shrine for Hindus worldwide. The temple is located at an altitude of 3,888 meters approx and is famous for its Shiva Lingam, a phallus-shaped formation made of ice. This temple represents an important part of Hinduism and is visited by millions of devotees every year from June to August for the Amarnath Yatra.
The Significance & Importance of the Amarnath Cave
The Amarnath Temple is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, or the holiest shrines in Hinduism. Lord Shiva is believed to reveal himself to his devotees in the form of the Shiva Lingam at this temple. The journey to the Amarnath Temple is considered challenging, but it is also believed to be an opportunity for spiritual growth.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva revealed the secret of creation and immortality to Goddess Parvati at this very place. The shrine is also believed to be one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, where the body parts of Sati, Lord Shiva's consort, fell after she immolated herself.

हिंदू पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, भगवान शिव ने अपनी सहवासिनी, देवी पार्वती को सृष्टि और अमरता के रहस्य को इसी जगह पर उनके सामने प्रकट किया था। इस मंदिर को सती, भगवान शिव की सहवासिनी ने अपने आप को जलाकर अपनी जान दे दी थी और उनके शरीर के अंग यहां गिरे थे। इसलिए यहां की मूर्तियों को अधिक महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है।
Visiting the Amarnath Temple
The holy visit to the Amarnath Temple is made in the month of July to August in Savan. During this time of the year, devotees of Lord Shiva flock to this incredible pilgrimage to get a glimpse of the Shiva Lingam, which is formed naturally from ice. Alongside the Shiva Lingam are also two ice lingams of Parvati and Ganesha.
The best time to visit the Amarnath Temple is during the summer months when the temple is open to pilgrims.
अमरनाथ मंदिर की पवित्र यात्रा सावन माह के जुलाई से अगस्त तक ही की जाती है। अमरनाथ मंदिर के दर्शन करने का सर्वोत्तम समय गर्मियों के महीनों में होता है, जब मंदिर तीर्थयात्रियों के लिए खुला रहता है।
How To Reach
You can rent a private vehicle from Jammu to Pahalgam and Baltal to get to Amarnath Cave. Buses for state transportation are also accessible. Two trekking paths are available to get to the cave: the conventional route through Srinagar and the shorter one via Baltal. You might choose to travel to Amarnath Yatra by helicopter rather than the exhausting and time-consuming hike.
From Baltal
The streamlined route travels through Baltal, Domial, Barari, and Sangam after departing from Chandanwari Base in Pahalgam. It is 14 kilometres long and may be finished in one to two days. Either walking or hiring a palki are options. (a seat carried on the shoulders of people).
From Pahalgam
Travelling one way via Pahalgam takes three to five days to reach Amarnath Cave. Compared to the Baltal route, this one is much wider and easier for pilgrims to travel. You can also hire horses to transport you the entire way to the Amarnath Temple.
Helicoptering to Amarnath
A helicopter ride is another way to get to Amarnath Temple. Following your arrival in Srinagar, drive up to Baltal and board the chopper to Panchtarni. Only 6 kilometres will need to be hiked from Panchtarni, or you can hire a palki or horse. आप अमरनाथ गुफा तक पहुंचने के लिए जम्मू से पहलगाम और बालटाल तक एक निजी वाहन किराए पर ले सकते हैं। राज्य परिवहन बसें भी उपलब्ध हैं।
बालटाल से
चंदनवाड़ी बेस से उतरने के बाद, यह रास्ता बालटाल, डोमियाल, बरारी और संगम से गुजरता है। यह 14 किलोमीटर लंबा है और एक से दो दिन में पूरा किया जा सकता है। पैदल चलने या पालकी किराए पर लेने के विकल्प हैं।
पहलगाम से
पहलगाम से एक तरफ जाने के लिए आमरनाथ गुफा तक तीन से पांच दिन तक का समय लगता है। बालटाल मार्ग के मुक़ाबले, यह मार्ग बहुत विस्तृत और तीर्थयात्रियों के लिए सहज होता है। आप पूरे मार्ग के लिए घोड़े भी किराए पर ले सकते हैं।
हेलीकॉप्टर से
अमरनाथ मंदिर तक हेलीकॉप्टर से भी पहुंचा जा सकता है। श्रीनगर में पहुंचने के बाद, बालटाल तक जाना होगा और फिर पंचतर्णी तक हेलीकॉप्टर बोर्ड करना होगा। पंचतर्णी से केवल 6 किलोमीटर पैदल किए जाने होंगे, या आप पालकी या घोड़े को भी किराए पर ले सकते हैं।
